Last summer I'd joined the NIN fan club The Spiral & paid the extra $$ in order to buy presale tickets & be able to get in early & it was a pretty good deal since I had no problems getting floor tix to two shows. I went down early & met up with saintangelsin who was happy to take my extra ticket since Judy was too sick to go.
They had a separate pickup for Spiral members so we got in our own line & we were let into the building about an hour early so we could at least wait inside and then about half an hour before the general doors opened they let us on the floor. Now if I'd been there early I would have been able to get in with the first group who got to watch the sound check & were allowed to stay in & hold their spots from that time on! As it was I was happy enough to *hear* the soundcheck while waiting for the Spiral will call to open as they played their cover of Joy Divison's "Dead Souls" from the Crow soundtrack. (sigh!) More reason to get to the Philly show on Saturday extra early :)
So even tho it was in a hugeass arena (I'd only ever been there once before to see Tool a few years ago) and I hate arena shows being in the 2nd row against the barrier made it quite tolerable. We were right in front of Twiggy (Jeordie) tho it seemed so weird to see him playing for NIN after seeing him dozens of times with Marilyn Manson. Ever the dysfunctional poster child tho! Trent looked good - he's looking pretty buff these days & shaved his hair real short so its more like the industrial Henry Rollins going on there instead of the pale waify one we've come to expect. But his angst and fury is ever the same & they did a good set of many favs (tho certainly there are ones I wish they would have done like Happiness In Slavery and Perfect Drug and of course more from Pretty Hate Machine...) No complaints tho, it was a good show, only wish I'd brought my little camera as they had no problem with small digitals - damn! I'll just make sure to bring it to Philly!
setlist - one long set though they came on & off a couple of times, no encore tho
